Kai Coordinator

I was raised in Wairarapa and Taranaki, joined the Army at 18 and moved around the country a bit. 15 years ago the Army moved me to Whanganui and I felt like I’d found a place to call home.
I became involved in kai distribution during covid, working with Te Ranga Tupua to help get Kai and resources to those that needed it. Im stoked to have the opportunity to help out at Kai Hub.

A small group of people started a conversation about how Whanganui might reimagine its food system. Through conversations with the community we began the journey of establishing an organisation that would collect the excess food and redistribute it.

A feasibility study was conducted to inform the implementation of this project.

It found that by strengthening the connection between organisations and our communities, we can reduce kai in the landfill and grow community resilience.

In early 2022 we formed Whanganui Kai Trust, to enable the Whanganui Kai Hub to operate as a food rescue and teaching space in Whanganui. Kai Hub now employs two staff and welcomes many volunteers. We rescue kai four times per week and hold events regularly.

We see 2023 as a year of growth for Kai Hub. We want to solidify our roots in the community and begin holding space for new ideas to grow. We'd love to bring you along for the journey.
